Brașov, Romania – November 18th, 2025.

Digi-Rangeland officially started its three-day Transnational Workshop on November 18th, gathering representatives from more than ten European countries to advance knowledge, innovation, and collaboration in rangeland livestock farming.

Day 1: Setting the Stage for Collaboration

The workshop began with a welcome session led by Germain Tesnière (IDELE), Laura Chirilă-Pașca (ADEPT), and George Catean (Ferma Cățean), followed by an interactive round-table that allowed participants to get to know each other and align expectations.

A comprehensive overview of the project set the context for the days ahead, after which ADEPT and invited speakers presented an insightful introduction to Romanian agriculture, with a special focus on livestock systems in Transylvanian rangelands.

The morning continued with presentations of national challenges, needs, and obstacles related to rangeland management. Representatives from Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, France, Spain, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece contributed to a rich exchange of perspectives, supported by translations into national languages to ensure inclusive discussion.

After a networking lunch and group photo, the afternoon was dedicated to Workshop A, where participants worked in country groups to identify needs, examine cross-country solutions, and synthesise actionable insights. The day concluded with a Q&A session.

Day 2: Field Visits to Innovative Romanian Farms

On Wednesday, participants travelled across Covasna and Brașov counties to explore practical examples of rangeland management and livestock farming in Romania.

• Farm Visit 1 – Eurofence Farm (Aita Mare):
  Attendees discovered innovative farm practices and witnessed a technology demonstration focusing on Gallagher intelligent electric fencing systems.

• Farm Visit 2 – Măieruș Angus Farm:
  Participants toured the farm, learning about herd management and sustainable production in an Angus cattle system.

• Farm Visit 3 – Ferma Cățean:
  The final stop highlighted local sheep and cattle breeds, pasture management approaches, on-farm processing, and farmers’ perspectives on current challenges and future technological opportunities.

Day 3: Thematic Workshops and Project Outlook

The final day began with a brief introduction and a warm-up quiz, followed by Workshop B, where participants worked in thematic groups to deepen the analysis of rangeland issues and co-develop recommendations for the project.

After a final round of discussions and evaluation of the workshop, Germain Tesnière, Laura Chirilă-Pașca, and Jóhannes Sveinbjörnsson presented the conclusions and outlined the next steps for DIGI-Rangeland as it continues fostering innovation and collaboration across European rangelands.
